So, How Was It For You?....

Is it over yet? It should be over. It must be over.

Christmas. What is it for? Really?

I KNOW it's SUPPOSED (theoretically) to be a celebration of the birth of Christ but I'm not religious and the kids, to my unending pride, despite attending a CofE establishment of education, have a healthy disinterest and skepticism in all things religion-related.

Though they have, to a child, related specifically to one aspect of the Christmas story and that's the bit when some blokes in beards bring the infant boy child gold, frankincense and myrrh or, more importantly, presents. Santa of course is all too real, has a much more impressive beard and is far easier to believe in that an omnipotent being or a virgin birth (the Teen Twins ARE 16 after all). Santa brings presents, in sacks, ergo Christmas is mostly about presents? Well, to the children it is.

But as Santa's Little Helper (Rank, Advanced. Serial no, 007) I have to marshall the presents for subsequent distribution by, of course, the bloke with the impressive beard. This is akin to mounting a bank job, tactical shopping assault and fighting the forces of evil (otherwise known as The Royal Mail) all at the same time.

Then there is The Wrapping Pts 1, 2, 3 & 4 and the ill-advised sequel, Wrapping on Christmas Eve; The Drunk Version where only the judicious and frequent application of gin can keep the Christmas spirit alive.
So it's probably mostly about presents for me too, but not quite in the same way.

Until Christmas morning when the great unwrapping begins and in the frenzied blur of flying paper, ribbons, glitter and labels, there's squeals of excitement. And, between the debris, a brief glimpse of a child's face suffused with joy. That's Christmas, right there, those moments ... and they last absolutely no time at all. Certainly less time than you spent stood in the supermarket queue on Christmas Eve *sigh.*

But it must be worth it ... from sore feet to aching bank account from wrapper's cramp and sellotape elbow ... because next year, we're going to do it all again.

*Starts Christmas shopping*
